他退隱在曠野裡，或在聖殿內偏僻的地方，獨自祈禱。當他在安提約基雅蒙召為使徒時，他坐末座，如同在宗徒大事錄上所記載的。這好像是在對人說，雖然他的學問和使命是在眾人之上，他卻似乎韜晦自藏，默默無語，好像常在祈禱，事奉上主。
此外在學業上，聖保祿也很勤勞。天主如果見有需要，自會給人賦與明達之恩，並按照所需的程度。不過，誰若盡其所能，做他應做的事，天主就常會賦與更多的明達之恩……如果一個農夫有一塊應該播種的良田，他手中固然已掌握了一些東西，可是，如果他肯流汗耕耘，那塊田就會產生果實。對於學業也是如此。所
以，這是很重要的；我們應該觀察聖保祿在這方面的內修生活……聖保錄用他的書信所完成的宏偉建築，使我們驚奇不已；可是，我們也應該注意，他曾多麼努力學習，多麼熱切祈禱，以求得更多的學識。
我們必須好好地認識他的內修生活；這是真正的熱枕，真正對人靈和耶穌基督的愛……他在論及福音時，曾說過，真正的愛「甚至於帶鎖鏈」（弟後二 9 ）不是為了貪圖人世的光榮，也不是為了維持生活，而是為了愛基督。
