雅培理神父在世時已有聖人的聲譽，教宗、樞機、主教和教會人士都對他表示敬意。他病重垂危時，教宗保祿六世親自去探望、慰問他。教宗離開後一個半小時，他安然去世。
雅培理神父的偉大處有兩點：宣傳福音的強烈熱火和對時代徵兆的明白認識。
現在是什麼時代？是一個動的時代，是追求娛樂的時代，也是追求智識的時代。一百年以前，歐洲的社會，每村每城都是以聖堂為中心，一切節日都是教會的節日，青年人的娛樂是到聖堂和聖堂側旁的大廳唱經、唱歌和遊戲。但是百年以來，社會的型態改了。青年人的娛樂場所是電影院和舞廳，人們星期日已經不進聖堂，卻奔向山上和海濱或鄉間別墅。各城鎮不僅是學校林立，而且雜誌、日報、週刊各處都有。電視和廣播把新聞消息和悲喪喜慶的事故，帶進每個人的家裡。
在這樣的一個社會裡，宣講福音的人還坐在教室裡等學生來聽要理；站在講壇上、在彌撒中講道，來聽的人有幾個呢？要理班和講道台上所講的，生硬不中聽；外面電視、電影、廣播、雜誌、日報，則充滿形形色色的新聞、各種引人的文章、各種誘惑的畫面。人們腦海所吸收進來的，都是和福音沒有關係的，甚且很多相反福音的真理，又怎能怪社會的思想和生活型態一切都俗化了呢？
雅培理神父對當代的社會瞭若指掌，看到了影響社會人心的最大勢力是大眾傳播工作。他的心燃起了一股宣傳福音的熱火，他決定用大眾傳播工具把福音的話帶入現代社會。現代的人既然都用電影、電視、廣播、刊物宣傳他們的思想，人們又樂於接納，為什麼宣傳福音的人不用這些工具呢？雅培理神父說：若是聖保祿宗徒生在現代的世界，他必定成為一位新聞記者。宣傳福音的人，應該使用最新和最有效的宣傳工具和方法，向當代的人宣傳福音，而不能僅僅用著幾百年前的傳統工具和方式。人家坐飛機，我們還坐牛車，兩者的效力相差多遠！
雅培理神父於是創立聖保祿孝女會，從事大眾傳播工作。在五十年前，教會風氣還以大眾傳播為新奇的工作，而這種新奇的工作又需要大量的金錢；雅培理神父遇到了很大的阻力和困擾。但是他不是遇難而退的人，他誠心祈禱，加強對天主的信心，在失敗中求進取。教宗保祿六世曾說雅培理在不長的歲月裡，使這番事業有驚人的成就，原因在於「一個謙遜而又忠誠的僕人之意願，和上主仁慈而又慷慨的聖意合作」。
天主玉成了雅培理神父的工作， 因為那是時代所需要的工作。宣傳福音是把福音帶進人生的各層面， 帶入社會的光明和黑暗的角落。聖堂和要理廳是已經有意接納福音的人之聽道場所，宣講要理和主日福音是給對基督已有認識的人所講的；但是怎樣使不知道基督的人願意接納祂的福音，那是今日宣傳福音的人最大又最難的工作。在社會的各個辦公室裡，在各級學校的講壇上，在每個家庭的客廳中，用各種方式把福音帶進去。臉上常是笑容，語言常是現代的用語，講論的理由常是用流行的學術，聽的人就算不信，也不能說講話的人不識時務。然而講話的人，自己心中要懷有聖神，行動要表現福音，處處和不信基督的人接觸，要謹防引起對基督的反感，這種生活，比僅在聖堂和要理廳講道者的生活，還更困難，卻更有意義。
宣傳福音無所謂直接傳教和間接傳教，把福音的聖言帶入社會大眾的生活裡就是傳教。傳教的拉丁原文是「派遣」，是「使命」。基督向宗徒們說：「如同父派遣了我， 我也同樣派遣你們。」（若二十21）基督被派遣來世界，居在人間，祂的每秒鐘的生活都是傳教。被基督派遣的人居在人群裡，每秒鐘的生活也應該是傳教。
大眾傳播工作的使徒，是被基督所派遣的使徒，經由自己的語言和形象，進入每個家庭和每個人心中，和聖若翰一樣預備基督的來臨。雅培理因此被稱為現代最偉大的傳教士，真是基督的化身。
