1884年4月4日，雅格．雅培理出生於阿爾巴福沙諾的聖樂倫村（San Lorenzo di Fossano）。二十世紀開始時，他是個十六歲的神學院修生。1900年12月31日那一夜，在阿爾巴的主教座堂裡，他回應教宗良十三世的邀請，徹夜朝拜聖體。年輕的雅培理跪在基督聖體前，沉浸在深邃的祈禱中。他的思緒迴響著當時教宗向所有天主教徒的請求：「要提升大眾文化的水準，並提供正確且必要的訊息。」他得到一個特殊的啟發，要為天主以及新世紀的人服務，特別是運用當代的傳播工具。而當時，這些工具只掌握在那些企圖破壞宗教信仰的人手中。
1914年8月20日，即阿爾巴主教指派雅培理神父負責教區報紙一年後，他召集一群男孩，成立「小工人印刷學校」。這個學校就像福音提及的小「種子」，有朝一日將長成大樹，是未來聖保祿會的雛形，從此他們展開漫長的冒險旅程。
起初，雅培理神父想成立平信徒組織，由基督徒作家、技術員和銷售員組成。後來，他意識到這些福音的僕人必須是獻身的男、女會士：「他們將全心、全意、全靈地愛天主。」
然而，當時的傳播工具操縱在無神論者手中，因此許多人認為把印刷與隨著時代而發展的傳播工具，委託給獻身者是件冒險的事，且讓女性參與會有更大的危險。但雅培理神父沒有因種種阻礙、誤解而氣餒，反而協助跟隨他的年輕人了解新使徒工作的迫切性與未來的展望。
1915年6月27日，德蘭．梅而珞和雅培理神父首次在阿爾巴的聖高斯瑪．達米盎（St. Cosmas and Damian）教堂見面。雅培理神父透過德蘭的哥哥柯斯坦．良修士（Costanzo Leone）的引薦而認識她。
因雅培理神父的神學造詣深厚，教友都尊稱他為「神學家」。他邀請德蘭加入在阿爾巴開始的縫紉工作，德蘭毫不猶豫地答應，使得陪同她前去的母親，立即意識到所能做的就是支持女兒與他合作。
因此，德蘭與其他女子一起為軍人縫製衣服。同時，雅培理神父與他的靈修導師基愛沙神父，時常在工作、祈禱及信仰生活上教導、指引她們。
