然而我們感到自己非常軟弱、無知、無能、並且缺少一切，無論是在精神和知識方面，或是在傳教事業和神貧方面。
以色列人民在歷史上，沒有忠實地遵守天主的諾言，無數次內心產生頑固背約。感恩經第四式說得很好，概括了這種情況；「祢多次與人訂立盟約，並藉先知教導人類，期待著救恩。」
先知繼續要求人們遠離罪惡，擺脫模糊的行徑而悔改。以色列人民受到天主的邀請；要面對遠離天主的結果所造成的災難，也要有希望在天主內，因天主始終是忠實和寬恕我們的。
就這樣，耶肋米亞宣佈天主將更新祂的子民，並與他們重新訂立盟約，且將盟約寫在他們的心中。厄則克耳先知則說：天主的行動將藉著賦予子民新的身份來淨化他們。

「天主揀選最無能的工具，最無知的人。」
在我們方面，我們是什麼呢？
我們是非常軟弱的：有時這軟弱是身體上的，但首先是精神上的。
無知：以前什麼都不知道，現在也是；特別是關於我們所做的傳教工作，我們不能了解它的意義。關於修道生活，我們能了解多少？沒有多少。我們是無知的。
無能：我們甚至不斷重新計劃已反覆做過的事情。許多時候我們想做一些好事，因為我們相信自己比會憲寫的知道得更多（譯注：但不是天主的旨意，不會帶來好處）。
缺少一切：驕傲多麼令我們盲目。我們雖然做該做的事，卻用不一樣的方式，由於我們認為更好…這是一個錯誤。如果我們按照天主的路行走，祂會以其恩寵支持我們，要不然我們會如同伯多祿一般，開始懷疑時，就往下沉，他需要祈求耶穌幫忙。
我們的精神是否充滿聖德？在智慧（知識）上，我們需要成為世界的導師，我們需要將天主的光帶給那些自以為明達的人。我們知道多少？如果我們知道一點點，也都是因天主所賜的恩典…
在傳教事業上，我們是無能的。沒錯，我們開始時什麼都不知道，首批入會者，他們非常溫馴地跟隨天主的領導。
在神貧方面，我們能說什麼呢？你們帶來了多少財產，這些產業在那兒呢？誰特別在經濟方面支持我們的修會？你有繳入會費，但不要驕傲，不要認為我們給了一些…，就算你們帶了幾百萬來，也不算什麼；這為一天的花費，甚至為購買傳教工具還不夠用。
所以，不要破壞天主的計劃。天主選了世上卑賤的和受人輕視的，以及那些一無所有的，為消滅那些有的（格前一28）。至少在這方面我們需要有信德，天主揀選了最無能的工具、最無知的人、身體上軟弱的人、在社會上沒有地位的人，甚至從最貧困的家庭裡挑選，所有一切都為顯出是祂工程的結晶。
